In an attempt to help us all be reminded what AI can and can not do for us, we have taken the time with this month’s issue to focus on the HUMAN side of writing. Large language models like ChatGPT are part of our new reality. With their sheer speed and availability, these tools have already changed the face of ordinary writing tasks. The Reading Writing Center tutors are tasked with helping students figure out ways to navigate language and how to think about what they read. Most approach their writing assignments in a very product-oriented way; “I must produce this paper to pass this assignment.” While this is true in the short term, what has gotten lost is the whole idea of using language as a means of self-expression. We want to invite you to think about all the ways your writing is unique to YOU- no one else is exactly like you – had your unique experiences – your unique responses. Each one of us has something to contribute, and sharing our stories, from small moments to life changing ones, has a ripple effect. We invite each of you to consider how you can express yourself with words, in writing. Sharing our stories keeps us connected. Stories build bridges. We need these connections with one another now more than ever. -D. Borofka, RWC Coordinator
