March 2025 "A Moment of Stillness" by Jackie Zamora

Jackie Zamora

The mountains have always been one of my favorite places. I would go up there just to sit and let life pass me. I would sit on rocks next to a river; the sound of water was always peaceful. The breeze that swept across my face soothed me the way a caress would. The sound of birds chirping, nature’s music. I closed my eyes, still feeling the sun shine bright through my eyelids. My shoes and socks would come off at some point, and I’d put my feet in the ice-cold water since the snow would have just melted. When I felt my feet going numb, I’d take them out, putting my socks and shoes back on. I’d get up from the rock I had been sitting on and set on a quest to find beautiful green life. Usually, it takes walking through a world of trees before I find the beautiful green fields of grass and flowers. Stepping out of the trees into the field, I looked around for a second, then took off and ran as far as I could. I stopped and spun around, feeling free. At this particular time, the grass came up to almost my knee. I sat down on the grass, and by this point, the sun had started going down; it looked beautiful, and more than half of the sun could still be seen, but soon, it would disappear.

As I sat there, the warmth of the sun on my face and the cool grass beneath me, I felt a sense of tranquility wash over me. It was in these moments that the worries of the world faded away, replaced by the simple beauty of nature. I closed

my eyes again, taking a deep breath, inhaling the earthy scent of the grass and wildflowers. Just as I drifted into a peaceful reverie, a soft rustle nearby caught my attention. I opened my eyes to see a small rabbit peeking out from behind a cluster of wildflowers. Its nose twitched as it sniffed the air, seemingly unaware of my presence. I held my breath, not wanting to scare it away. Slowly, the rabbit hopped closer, its soft fur glistening in the fading sunlight. I felt a sense of wonder fill me as I watched this tiny creature explore its surroundings. At that moment, it struck me how interconnected we all are with nature, each being playing its role in this vast tapestry of life. Suddenly, the sky began to change hues, streaks of orange and pink spreading across the horizon. The sun was setting, casting a warm glow over the field. I realized I had to capture this moment, so I reached into my pocket for my sketchbook. As I began to draw, the rabbit paused, looking at me with its bright eyes as if it, too, appreciated the beauty of this fleeting moment. With each stroke of my pencil, I felt a surge of gratitude for the peace this place brought me. The mountains, the river, the fields—they were not just a backdrop to my life but an integral part of my journey. As the sun dipped lower, I promised myself to return to this sanctuary, to continue seeking the beauty that surrounded me.
