RWC tutor Gricelda Sanchez shares ideas on how to celebrate Galentine's Day this month.
Galentine’s Day started in the iconic show Parks and Recreation, starring Amy Poehler and many other amazing actors. In this episode of the show, Leslie, played by Amy Poehler, gets all her girl friends together for a celebration the day before Valentine's Day. This tradition became something that stuck, and to this day people celebrate Galentine’s day. Many use Valentine’s Day as a day to be with their significant other but it can easily be a day to celebrate all relationships. Valentine’s Day can be a sad day for some, but Galentine’s day is all about celebrating all your relationships. These can range from mother-daughter relationships to friendships.
Ways to Celebrate
We could celebrate that special relationship we have with a best friend and those who have been with us through thick and thin. Friendship has always been difficult for me to find, but I am lucky to have had my best friend, my sister from another mister, in my life since I was 13 years old. She and I have been through it all, and we continue to nurture that friendship. We have had our falling outs, but our friendship is worth fighting for. February 13th can be a day to have a potluck with all your friends, or go out and make reservations at a nice restaurant. Another way to celebrate friendships can be by giving them flowers and chocolates, and a letter telling them how much they mean to you. Friendships are hard to find but worth keeping when you see them. Galentine’s Day is coming up, and we should celebrate those people in our lives who are there to lend an ear and a warm hug.
How I Celerate
My best friend and I try and get together at least once a month. We are often in different rhythms in our lives, making it hard to find the time to nurture our friendship. Last year, on February 13th, we went to watch a movie and have dinner together. It was great to have a day to catch up on all the ups and downs of life. Although we see each other once a month, it does not seem strange or awkward when we meet up. On the contrary, it feels like home. This year, I am hoping to spend Galentine’s with my partner in crime again and reminiscence on our long friendship. We will use this time to simply catch up on how life has been treating us.
