December 2024 "December Break Activities" by Emily Rawlings

After getting a taste of Thanksgiving, and I do not mean the taste of the scrumptious mashed potatoes and gravy, it may leave you wanting to find activities that do not result in a political debate. Many people will want to find an activity outside of the home this upcoming Holiday break to bring excitement and to escape the confines of one’s home. However, who wants to spend money to be happy? There are many different activities that you can do on Holiday break that do not break the bank.

Visit a library. You would be surprised how fun it is! For one, you get out of the house, and even if you don’t like books, the library lets you check out movies and video games for free, so if you would like, you can bring a laptop (or use a computer already at the library if you are not afraid to sit next to people), and you can watch a movie and play some games as long as you respect the quiet atmosphere of the library.

Visit a museum or art gallery. Many museums give students a discounted admission price or even let students in for free. Additionally, some museums designate days when everyone gets in free. For example, the Fresno Art Museum has free admission every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month until next summer. However, if you do not want to figure out whether you can get into a museum for free as a student, you can always visit an art gallery where they sell the art itself and pretend that you are shopping.

However, if you are tempted to touch everything in a museum, you can always go window shopping at an antique store. At an antique store, you get to look at fantastic pieces of the past, pick them up, and potentially buy them, but no pressure, it is always fun just to see what is in antique stores, and you never know what you are going to see! For example, when I visited Palm & Olive Antiques, one of the employees explained that the sword hanging on the wall was several hundred years old and that it still had blood on it. Eclectic House in Fresno and Clovis Antique Mall are fantastic options.

If you aren’t afraid to go outside, you can visit a cemetery. If you find that you would rather spend time with the dead than with your family, the cemetery is a great option. Although visiting the cemetery comes with respecting the dead, this does not mean it has to be boring. At the cemetery, you can have a picnic, read a book, draw, or if you need someone to vent to, I am sure the dead have just been waiting to hear the tea(!) only you have to share.

In conclusion, there are many ways to get out of the house during the holiday break, and doing so does not necessitate emptying your pockets. Additionally, although it is the season of giving, you do not have to give your sanity for the sake of charity. Remember to take care of yourself and take some time to enjoy the break- you have earned it!
