Every year on April 30th, National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day is celebrated by animal lovers who are passionate about bringing happiness to their furry friends. This national holiday was established to bring vast awareness to the thousands of pets who were left abandoned in shelters and who still have hope that one day, they will find their forever homes.
The main goals that this holiday hopes to achieve are to (of course) get as many animals adopted into a safe and loving home and to bring in more committed volunteers that can offer their time at the shelter or become a foster for the pets.
How Can You Show Your Support?
If you would like to participate in this special holiday, there are a variety of ways that you can do so. One way might be to go to your local animal shelter in your free time and volunteer to walk the dogs! Given that animal shelters are at their highest capacity, this leaves little to no time for each dog to get out and experience a fun walk around the block. Also, if you happen to have extra space, think about becoming a foster. Not only will this allow animal shelters to bring in more animals, but it allows each animal to know and experience what it feels like to run in a yard and be cared for by a family. If none of the options above work for you, you can also support your local animal shelter financially so they could have all the necessary supplies for every pet.
To anyone who enjoys being around animals or is having thoughts about getting a pet, I suggest that you adopt a pet at your local shelter, I'm sure they can't wait to meet you!
